[Photo description: A graphic featuring a photo of three organizing folders and a notebook, in varying colors, I purchased a few weeks ago.]

It’s nearing Back to School time here in Alabama, so I’m throwing back to a few weeks ago when I needed to buy some organization folders and a new notebook for a few professional and personal projects and found these great products. Organizational products (planners, pens, notebooks, etc.) are one of my favorite things to buy; right now, I’m counting down until the 2020 planners are out later this year.

If you are looking to buy organization items for yourself or others here in Alabama, remember there is a sales tax holiday, starting tomorrow (7/19). Here’s the link to what can be purchased: https://www.al.com/news/2019/07/alabama-back-to-school-sales-tax-holiday-is-july-19-21-list-of-tax-free-items.html

[Photo description: A photo of the fruit basket that I received as a birthday present from my mom two weeks ago. It had pears, bananas, grapefruits, and apples inside.]

#TBT to my 27th birthday two weeks ago. I had a very low-key birthday for multiple reasons, mostly because it was during the week and I was mostly in work mode that week. But I did take some time to catch up on The Handmaid’s Tale and to finally watch Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse and US. (Both were great — Into the Spiderverse deserved every award it got!)

For as long as I can remember, my mom has gotten me a birthday cake. I have had everything, from sheet cakes, a cookie cakes, carrot cakes, to those doll body cakes that they used to do back in the 90s. But this year, I did not want one and she obliged.

So I’m in the middle of watching the latest episode of Handmaid’s Tale, and get a knock at the door. It is a delivery guy with a fruit basket addressed to me. It was from my mom. She still wanted to get me something. She truly got me. I normally don’t like surprises, but I really appreciate this one.

My question of the day is that what’s the best birthday surprise you have ever received?

[Photo description: One of my senior photos from ten years ago, me smiling towards the camera, in makeup, a yellow top, pearls, and permed hair.]

Time flies. This photo is from ten years ago. I’m 17, on the cusp of graduating from my high school. Valedictorian. Senior Class President. SGA President. Gotten into all of the colleges and universities I applied to. And stressed out of my mind. This photo is also before braces and my natural hair revolution that took place a few years after in college.

Next Wednesday, I’m turning 27. Five years removed from college. Three years have passed since grad school. Finally getting my career off the ground. To be honest, I didn’t know what this age would look like or feel like at 17. But I do know that over the next few days, I will be reflecting what 26 was, the lessons learned, and how 27 will be on a new level.

[Photo description: A photo of me in the late 1990s in a yellow-colored leotard and hat, sitting on a pedestal with legs and hands crossed for a dance photo.]

I turn 27 this month (on the 26th), and thought it would be fun to share some old photos of me, starting with this one. The year was 1996 or 1997, and I am about four or five years old in this photo. I was taking dance classes at Corky Bell, one of the local dance studios here in my hometown. Those classes were the best part of my day, outside of going to school and watching my VHS tapes of Matilda and Harriet the Spy on repeat (which I still own both). Oh, to go back to this age to when bills and building my career were the farthest from my mind. #TBT #ThrowbackThursday #June26 #BirthdayPosts #CancerSeason

Throwback Thursday - May 2019 (1)

[Photo description: A photo of a medallion that I received at my graduation ceremony when I graduated from the UAB School of Public Health; its inscription reads “For the Public’s Health, School of Public Health” and with an imprint of one our school logos. Along with the medallion, I have my Honors College keychain I received at a graduation ceremony for all of the Honors College students at my university from undergrad. The chain broke off.]

Reminiscing again about graduation time, I found the medallion I received from @uabsoph three years ago when I graduated with my Masters in Public Health. It was still in the box I received it in. I used to carry my Honors College keychain with my car and house keys, but the chain broke sadly. Great mementos from a great, fulfilling, and exciting time in my life!

[Photo description: A grid photo of (1)a no-yeast pizza crust recipe I researched from Yummly.com, (2) a picture of the pizza before I put in the oven, and (3) a picture of the pizza after I took it out.]

#tbt when I had a craving for some pizza and just went ahead with making a homemade one weeks ago. Shout out to the recipe website Yummly for having a no-yeast pizza crust recipe; I found it courtesy of Pinterest. On this pizza, I included some pulled pork, spinach, and green pepper. red pepper flakes, and some good ol’ shredded mozzarella. It was amazing, and I kneaded some Italian seasoning into the pizza crust. I have to make this again very soon!

[Photo description]: A trio of parking passes from my alma mater, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, from when I was in my graduate program.]

A few months ago while I was cleaning out my car for the first time in a long time, I found my old parking passes from when I was in grad school. Seeing those passes then reminds me of the long mornings (especially since parking was terrriblllleeee), days, nights, and weekends I spent in that program, trying to make something of myself. Since graduation season is soon upon us, I’m reminiscing a little bit more today.

[Photo description: A colorful miniature statue of Vulcan that sits in the middle of Railroad Park in my hometown of Birmingham, AL.]

I took this photo of the mini Vulcan statue in @railroadpark on a walk with my dad back in February. Although we have a 56-foot (or 17 meters) tall statue of Vulcan sitting on top of Red Mountain, it’s pretty cool to have a colorful one in the park where people can take pictures with it and where kids can learn a bit about our city’s history. I have lived, worked, and studied in Birmingham for all of my life — almost 27 years to be exact — and I am still learning about this wonderful city. So my question to you — what’s one unique thing about your town (whether it is in the city, a rural area, overseas, your own unique community, etc.)? Write it in the comments below.

[Photo description: A photo grid of writing across a medium-size whiteboard in black marker, with the description of “What’s your planning process?”]

#TBT Before my sophomore year of college began, I went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond (or Walmart — it’s all a blur now) to buy all of my items for my dorm room, after learning the ropes of living by myself during freshman year! I’m a kinesthetic learner — absolutely adore hands-on projects and even application exams. I was buying the board to help me possess my papers and projects in my classes and all of my extracurriculars. The board is one of the things I got me through all of those lengthy and complex papers in my graduate program. Almost three years out of grad and five out of undergrad, the board still serves me, whether it is to write a lesson plan, design a program flyer, write out a workout, or simply a to-do list.

So my ask of the week is…. What’s your planning process? Are you a complex planner or do you just wing it? Leave it in the comments below.

[Photo description: A photo grid of photos taken by me from a Fall Out Boy concert, which took place March 17, 2016 in Birmingham, AL. Photo also features a question “What’s the best concert you ever went to?”]

#tbt 3 years ago, on this upcoming Sunday, I went to my first ever Fall Out Boy show in my hometown of Birmingham. It took almost ten years to get to that moment; I had dreamt of seeing them live since I was 14 years old in 2006. That night was magical. They played a lot of my favorites, such as “Hum Hallejuah” from Infinity on High and “Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes” from my favorite FOB album, Folie A Deux. I think I might have saved some of the confetti from this show. LOL.
This is one of my favorite concerts I have gone to; a few more would be seeing The Roots, Diana Ross, and Frankie Beverly and Maze. One of my goals for the next few years is to go to more concerts.

What are your favorite concerts you’ve ever been to? Comment below.
